The Invitation – one of my favorite poems

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love
for your dream
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon…
I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow
if you have been opened by life’s betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes
without cautioning us
to be careful
to be realistic
to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand at the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
Yes.”

It doesn’t interest me
to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after the night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the centre of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments.

For those of you that missed Oprah’s webcast of A New Earth – Chapter 1 (like me), here it is for download.

I just downloaded it to my iTunes to watch later. I was busy last night helping my daughter put the finishing touches on her Science Fair project! Whew! Thank goodness that project is over… I better get an A — I mean, she better get an A. heheh.

PASSION and GIVING: the key to real happiness

Monday, July 9th, 2007

I was having coffee with my friend, Emily, the other morning and after we chit chatted about the usual — struggles with our kids, what we did for the July 4th holiday, how blazing hot it is in Arizona right now — we finally got to the juicy stuff. By juicy, I mean PASSION, and by passion, I don’t mean X rated. I’m talking about passion for life. Passion is what lights someone up or puts that gleam in their eye and that spring in their step. Passion jolts you out of bed even when you are sleep deprived. When you have passion, you don’t even consider hitting the snooze button. So, across from the table at Starbucks, Emily lowers her voice and whispers to me, “Do you want to know what I can’t get out of my head?” The tone of her voice and the secret smile on her face made me stand up at attention and say, “YES!!!!” I could sense her passion and I couldn’t wait to hear what it was. She tells me she saw the movie “An Inconvenient Truth” and ever since hasn’t been able to rest.

The movie inspired her to want to take some action to make a difference in the environment. She rattled off a few very cool ideas on what she wants to do. She is an elementary school teacher and could do something in her classroom. I encouraged her to start somewhere. It really doesn’t matter what she does, just as long as she begins… and well, Emily started an environmental mom blog. Check it out!

Feeling passionate or attracted to something is a sign to follow that path. Even if it doesn’t always make sense or it doesn’t lead to incredible wealth. What it will give you is a sense of fulfillment and happiness.

Also a benefit to taking action in a cause outside yourself is that is it puts your focus on something bigger than you. Suddenly your problems don’t seem so important. I always notice that my clients overall happiness increases when they are volunteering their time or services to others in need. It is true what they say, “When you give, you always get back more in return.”

Something to think about: What are your PASSIONS and how can you GIVE in that area? Check out this blog article from Monday Morning Power with some great tips on finding your passion.
