When Eckhart Tolle said to Oprah, “We should be asking – What does life want from me, rather than what do I want from life?”, it reminded me of the famous JFK quote, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”
Tolle claims the book, A New Earth, wanted to be born into this world. He says it wasn’t a book he decided to write, instead it chose to be written. From a place of stillness, he used inspiration and intellect to write the book. Here are some suggestions he makes to allow your purpose to awaken within you:
- Find your place of stillness to stop the thinking and noise to allow the inspiration of your purpose to come to you.
- Trust life when an impulse comes. Have discernment to know when the impulse is superficial or ego-based.
- Use nature to get in touch with the deeper realm with in you. Just let yourself be in the space with out labeling. Get out of the trap of the mental noise in your head. Stop getting “lost” in your head.
Tolle said that essential things happen because of crisis. I like to say, change happens out of inspiration or desperation. People in the world are awakening now because we have to. If this shift doesn’t happen now, then our world will go downhill rapidly and collapse. Technology amplifies egoic dysfunction. Therefore, the more technology advances, the worse our conditions will become. We need to put our egos in check! How do you do this?
- Avoid negative messages through tv, media, and people.
- Look at your own mind. Examine your thoughts. They add to the collective consciousness. You put that energy into the world even if you never vocalize the thoughts.
- How do you act in everyday situations? Don’t amplify the negativity in your mind by adding more to it. Notice how you were conditioned to think and decide to recondition your thoughts. Allow new thoughts to just be.
- Become present to the moment. What works for me is practicing yoga and concentrating on my breath. I immediately shift away from my thoughts to a place of peace and stillness in the moment of my body.
- Learn to do simple things with focus and presence. Experience each present moment with all your senses and stop worrying about what you will do in the next moment.
Tolle advises that you can enjoy the world of form and things but true satisfaction doesn’t come from there. Then Oprah summarized it so well, by saying — Profound change happens not from a place of dissatisfaction but first from acceptance of your situation. Make peace with the moment (it doesn’t mean you approve of the situation). Then you will be able to move out of it. What you resist persists.
Next Monday night will be Chapter 2 and it is all about the EGO! You can watch the Chapter 1 webcast here.
